Jury Awards $13.5 Million To Pedestrian Who Lost Leg

A Portland, Oregon man was awarded $13.5 million after a garbage truck hit him, severing his left leg above his knee.  The 57-year old, Scott Busch, was crossing the street with a “walk” signal when the garbage truck made an illegal right hand turn.  The driver of the truck was cited for failure to obey traffic control devices and for careless driving.  The jury awarded Mr. Busch $3 million for medical and other expenses, and $10.5 million for pain and suffering.  They also awarded Mr. Busch’s wife $400,000 for the effect the crash has had on their relationship and lives.

When someone is injured in a crash, the injuries can be catastrophic, and life changing.  Mr. Busch was not able to afford the prosthetic leg he needed until he received the verdict.  Prior to that, he was not able to work for months, and when he returned he was unable to leave for lunch due to exhaustion, he was forced to wear a temporary prosthetic that was neither effective nor comfortable, and he was not able to interact with his wife and three children in ways he had in the past. For example, he was not able to move his youngest son to college.  If you or a loved one have been hurt in a crash, the damage caused to you may be greater than your medical bills.  Plattner Verderame, P.C. is able to help you evaluate your situation to assess whether you have a viable claim.  We are honest people who spend our days helping honest clients.
