Kids II and Fisher Price Recall Rocking Sleepers Linked to Infant Deaths

Kids II (also called Kids2) has recalled all of models of its infant rocking sleepers due to potential deadly hazards posed to infants. The recall affects close to 694,000 units, and comes on the heels of Fisher-Price recalling 4.7 million Rock ‘n Play sleepers, which have been linked to between 10 and 32 infant deaths between 2011 and 2018. The Kids II models have been linked to 5 infant deaths since 2012.

Both rocking sleepers were sold at major outlets, including Walmart, Target, Toys “R” Us, and more.

What is the problem with the rockers?

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends that parents place their infants on their backs in order to sleep. Infant rockers keep children at an incline, which allows those children to accidentally roll over and suffocate themselves, whether they are strapped into the rocker or not.

The AAP has been instrumental in forcing the companies to recall these products. Dr. Rachel Moon, chair of the AAP Task Force on Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), pressed that an infant rocking sleeper “does not meet the AAP’s recommendations for a safe sleep environment for any baby. Infants should always sleep on their back, on a separate, flat and firm sleep surface without any bumpers or bedding.” The CPSC also includes pillows, blankets, and stuffed animals in their recommendations of what to avoid.

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has issued press releases naming the makes the models of each recalled infant rocker.
