High School Fails to Clean Basketball Court…Student Suffers Brain Injuries
A former Oregon high school student has sued his school district for damages resulting from a traumatic brain injury he received while playing basketball. In October 2013, Robert Amarillas was chasing after a ball when he slipped on vomit that was on the court. An unidentified student had previously vomited on the court, and a coach cleaned some – but not all – of it up. As a result, according to the lawsuit, Amarillas did not see the remaining amount on the court and slipped on it. The fall resulted in vision impairment, the need for physical therapy, and long term cognitive disabilities. Amarillas had to be put in classes for disabled students and, according to the suit, is subject to a severe loss in potential earning capacity.
