Los Angeles Hospital Settles “Patient Dumping” Case
Good Samaritan Hospital in Los Angeles, California agreed to a $450,000 settlement in a case where it was accused of improperly discharging a homeless patient. The Hospital was accused of “dumping” the patient – releasing the person somewhere other than a residence, without the patient’s consent. The settlement funds will be paid for homeless recuperative care, civil penalties, and costs. The City Attorney, Mike Feuer, noted after the settlement that “patient dumping is inhumane and must be stopped.”
Hospitals have a well-known responsibility to take patients in and give them proper treatment. However, it is less commonly known that hospitals also have a duty to properly, and safely, discharge patients into environments that will not endanger the patent. If you or a loved one have been rejected by a hospital, improperly treated by a hospital or improperly and irresponsibly released by a hospital, you may be legally entitled to fair and just compensation.
