Mr. Plattner has practiced law in Phoenix Arizona for more than 40 years. He first worked as an associate attorney for Wolfe & Harris in Phoenix before working in the same capacity for two other local firms in Phoenix. He then opened his own solo practice in January 1982 before establishing Plattner Verderame, P.C. in 1991. Mr. Plattner and his team are dedicated to defending the rights and seeking justice of those injured by the negligent actions of others, serving clients across Arizona and nationwide.
Over the past four decades, Mr. Plattner has represented hundreds of clients. One case that still stands out was when he represented Jami Goldman, who lost both legs at age 19 due to negligence by the state of Arizona. The case went to trial in 1990. After success in trial Jamie graduated college, became a teacher, and went on to success as a disabled athlete, becoming a multiple medal winner, world record holder, and motivational speaker. Her book, “Up and Running: the Jami Goldman Story,” was published in 2001. Mr. Plattner also handled a pro bono women’s rights case earlier in his career in 1979, which he handled from start to finish and was tried before the Arizona Supreme Court. The case established the right of married women to keep their last name if they wished after marriage.
Mr. Plattner served as a judge pro tempore for the Maricopa Superior Court from 1986 to 2003 and the Arizona Court of Appeals in 1993. He volunteered on the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Posse from 1983 to 2013. He volunteered for many years with the State Bar civil practice and procedure committee and has served on Arizona Supreme Court committees. He has contributed numerous articles to various legal journals, including a monthly column, in the Arizona Attorney on “Arizona Appellate Highlights” since 1985. He is a sought after speaker about trial practice, ethics, and the psychology of persuasion.
The American Board of Trial Advocates, Phoenix chapter, named him Lawyer of the Year in 2017. Also in 2017 Mr. Plattner received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Arizona Association for Justice. He has been included in Best Lawyers in America and Best Lawyers in Arizona since 1999, has long been AV-Rated by Martindale-Hubbell, and has been included in every edition of Who’s Who in American Law between 1987 and 2008 and several editions of Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in the West and Who’s Who of Emerging Leaders in America.
Mr. Plattner is a member of the leader’s forum of the American Association for Justice. He is an associate member of (ABOTA), lifetime member and past president of the Arizona Association for Justice and member of the Arizona Bar Association. Mr. Plattner is a past president of the Phoenix Trial Lawyers Association and the Arizona Business and Professional Association. Locally involved as a member of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Phoenix, Mr. Plattner also served on multiple local boards and committees and is currently heading various capital and construction campaigns. He also sings in the congregation choir, plays guitar and drums, and describes himself as an enthusiastic, although not especially talented, golfer.
Mr. Plattner earned a Bachelor of Arts, cum laude, from Michigan State University in 1973, followed by a Juris Doctor from Arizona State University in 1977. He has been admitted to practice law before the Arizona State Bar, the U.S. District Court of Arizona and the Ninth Circuit of the U.S. Court of Appeals. He has also been a certified specialist in personal injury and wrongful death since the specialty was created in 1991.
Mr. Plattner married Susan Morris in 1983. Ms. Morris holds a master’s degree in special education, taught for 10 years in public schools in disadvantaged neighborhoods, and then founded Morris Tutoring Associates, Inc. in 1985, which she continues to own and operate. They have two adult children.
