Why do e-cigarettes explode?
Vaping involves smoking vapor through electronic cigarettes. Many individuals choose to use them as part of their efforts to quit smoking all together. While manufacturers and retailers like to advertise them as less dangerous options to cigarettes, using these devices has caused injury to countless consumers across the country. The most common incidents stem from exploding batteries, where the e-cigarette power source combusts into flames.
Unfortunately, because vaping is a new trend, there has not been much publicity and awareness about its dangers. While a report by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) states that explosions mostly happen while the e-cigarettes are charging, it is important to note that these events can happen at any time. There have also been cases of explosions while people are vaping with the e-cigarette in their mouth, as well as while the e-cigarette is simply sitting in a person’s pocket. Frighteningly, when e-cigarettes explode in your pocket, it is no small event. Witnesses have described the batteries as “flaming rockets,” and at least one battery has traveled as far as three houses due to the explosion.
There are several reasons why e-cigarettes may be exploding. Overcharged or overheated batteries may be at fault, as well exposure to cold temperatures. Batteries shorting out after touching other pieces of metal also appear to cause explosions.
Our skilled Phoenix product liability lawyers have the resources to help clients determine the true cause of their e-cigarette injuries. Failing to do so may make it impossible to retrieve any compensation from the company that made or sold the device.

The risks for Juul are different from the risks for other e-cigarettes
Juul is a sleek, compact e-cigarette that looks like a USB flash drive. The nicotine is delivered via small, colorful pods which come in flavors such as mint or mango. The pods are inserted into the device, which heats the nicotine and the smoker inhales the vapors.
Juul is the most popular selling e-cigarette in the U.S. market, but they are facing lawsuits because the product that seems to have been marketed towards underage smokers. New studies have shown that while e-cigarettes have the reputation of being safer than traditional combustible cigarettes, they do carry a cancer risk with long term use as the nicotine pods also contain harmful and potentially carcinogenic substances such as formaldehyde acrolein and methylglyoxal.
Juuls and college students
Underage vapers aren’t the only ones who are at risk. A recent study conducted by One Class found that 31.8% of all students surveyed owned an e-cig of some kind, and that 55% of student have seen a classmate vape during class; 50.5% reported seeing students vape in the school library. As Jull owns about 75% of the e-cig market, it is safe to assume that around 3/4 of all reported incidents involved a college student with a Juul.
What we can extrapolate from this data is simple: college students use their Juuls in places where traditional tobacco products have been banned. As such, students could be exposed to the risks associated with Juul vapors at any given time, in any given place. But, as the One Class study shows, few colleges have done anything to address the problem.
